Mary Had A Little Lamb
Traditional
Lyrics:
Mary had a little lamb,
Little lamb, little lamb,
Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow
Everywhere that Mary went,
Mary went, Mary went,
Everywhere that Mary went
That lamb was sure to go
It followed her to school one day,
School one day, school one day,
It followed her to school one day
Which was against the rules.
It made the children laugh and play,
Laugh and play, laugh and play,
It made the children laugh and play
To see a lamb at school
Mary had a little lamb,
Little lamb, little lamb,
Mary had a little lamb,
Its fleece was white as snow
Activities:
Lap Song (rhythm, motor coordination – all ages): Place your child on your lap and lightly bounce them to the beat for the first verse. Then, instead of singing the rest of the song, swap out activities for the word “little,” such as:
Bouncing (bounce child up & down to the rhythm),
Shaking (shake child lightly in a fun way)
Tickling (tickle!)
Rocking (rock back and forth to the rhythm with your child in your lap) Hugging (hug!)
Flying (hold child up as if flying, or get on your back and put the child’s belly on your legs to support them while flying with their arms, OR simply flap your own “wings” while the child flaps theirs)
Leaning (lean side to side to the rhythm)
Puppet & Tonal or Rhythm Patterns (rhythm & pitch development – all ages): With a lamb puppet or doll, sing the song together, and then try tonal or rhythm patterns with your child, pretending that the lamb is leading. Sing using “baa” as the syllable!
Colors (language development – ages 2-5): Sing the first verse repeatedly, swapping in different colors for “little” (“Mary had a purple lamb...”). You could combine this activity with the Rockin’ Red coloring book as your child colors in the lambs on the page.
